Rules & Guidelines

Format: Each dancer performs a 45-second freestyle with a 10-second countdown. Music is randomly selected for each dancer by the DJ.
Age Divisions: Mini (9 & under), Junior (10-12), Teen (13-15), Senior (16-21).
Scoring: Scored on a 1.00-5.00 point system. Judges evaluate musicality, creativity, technique, and performance quality.
Rules: No pre-planned choreography. No acrobatic tricks longer than 8 counts.
Registration: No on-site registration available. Must register through DanceComp Genie prior to the event.

FAQ

How do I prepare for Improv?: Listen to a wide variety of music and practice freestyling in different styles. Focus on musicality and being present in the moment.
What style of dance should I do?: Any and all styles are welcome. Judges look for authenticity, musicality, and creativity, not a specific style.
Is there an age minimum?: The Mini division accepts ages 9 and under. All ages are welcome to compete.
Do entry limits apply to Improv?: Improv entries will not count toward your studio's max amount of entries. The minimum to compete in any capacity (this includes Improv) is 5 convention dancers, so only studios that have 5 or more dancers will be allowed to add Improv entries.
What do winners receive?: Division winners receive an exclusive Intrigue T-shirt and recognition at the awards ceremony.
